Markets in Mallorca
Weekly markets are as much a part of Mallorca as sun and beaches. Every day of the week you can go Mallorca Shopping in various island locations and haggle with the market traders for the best price.
Markets in Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the island and also the largest city. In the centre, numerous markets take place on different days of the week. Fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, wine, olives and baked goods are served daily in the market hall at Plaza Olivar. Avinguda Gabriel Alomar i Villalonga plays host to a weekly flea market, offering antiques and art as well as colonial rarities, paintings, books and kitchen utensils.
On the Passeig de la Rambla there is a flower market every day and on Plaça Major a craft market is held daily between 10am and 2pm during the summer months. Bargaining is expected at the weekly markets in Palma de Mallorca. No trader expects the first price quoted to be the price of sale.
Farmers markets in Mallorca
Mallorcan farmers markets are a treasure trove for self-caterers who spend their holidays in a Holiday house and apartment in Mallorca or apartment on the Balearic Island. Pickled olives, citrus fruits, peppers, avocados, aubergines and almonds fill the stalls at every market. In Calvia, around 60 traders set up their stands each Monday. Alcúdia in the north of Mallorca also has a good market every Tuesday.
Fresh vegetables, hams, olive oil and spices are on sale in the streets of the historic centre. In Andratx, Selva, Colonia Sant Jordi on the southeast coast of Mallorca and Capdepera Marktag Wednesday is market day. In Campos, El Arenal on the south coast of Mallorca and Ses Salines it is on Thursdays. Fridays are market day in the tourist resorts of Llucmajor and Son Severa, while the old town of Sóller on the northwest coast of Mallorca, Portocolom, Cala Ratjada on the northeast coast of Mallorca and Santanyi on the southeast coast of Mallorca put up their stalls on Saturdays.
Weekly market in Sineu: farmer's market with 700 years of tradition
The farmer's market in Sineu is the Mallorca Weekly Market Sineu and dates back 700 years.
Throughout the week, the small town in the interior of the island lies in a gloomy half-sleep. Once a week, on Wednesday, the town awakens from its slumber and transforms into a vibrant place. Between the stalls the mixture of exotic spices, fresh peppers, leather goods and spicy goat's cheese fill the air. Here you can buy Mallorcan wine and cold pressed olive oil or buy handicrafts and leather handbags.
The well-known livestock market is where pigs, chickens, sheep and goats change hands and visitors turn up from all over to take in the atmosphere or to buy livestock. If you want to avoid the crowds, you should plan a visit early in the morning.
Jewellery and leather goods markets
Majorica is the name of a Mallorcan jewellery brand, where high-quality pearls are transformed into unique pieces of jewellery. The popular island souvenirs are made in Manacor.
Although none of the markets have specific factory outlets, individual traders do sell Majorica at better prices than you would normally get in the shops. Beautiful individual Majorica pieces are also offered at the weekly market in Alcúdia.
The city of Inca is the centre of leather goods production in Mallorca. On the weekly market, which takes place every Thursday, you will find high-quality belts, bags, purses and fashion accessories made of leather. Pay attention to the labelling stating where the goods were made, so you do not buy cheap fakes from the Far East.
