Playa de Santa Ponsa - family friendly sandy beach in the southwest of Mallorca
Playa de Santa Ponsa is the name of the holiday resort and the sandy beach at its centre in the southwest of Mallorca. The pearl white sand glistens in the sunshine and forms a stunning contrast to the turquoise sea. The approximately 900 m long sandy beach has first-class tourist facilities. Since Playa de Santa Ponsa descends so gently into the water and there are hardly any waves, the beach is a paradise for families.
Location of Playa de Santa Ponsa
Cala de Santa Ponsa is a large bay with rocky headlands on both sides. The main attraction is the 900 m long sandy beach, at the end of the bay in front of the holiday resort of the same name. It is up to 50 m wide and is divided in the middle by a park-like pine grove. On the northern shore there are a number of mid-range hotels.
On the rocky headlands on both sides of the bay there are a number of villas belonging to wealthy Europeans who have a second home in Santa Ponsa. The island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca, is about 20 km east of Santa Ponsa. It takes about 25 minutes to get to the city centre by rental car. The fastest way is to take the MA-1 Motorway in Mallorca, which is six lanes wide in some sections. Free and paid parking is available around Santa Ponsa.
The fine sandy beach at Santa Ponsa
The fine sandy Playa de Santa Ponsa is the jewel of the resort. Although the beach is divided into two sections, the warm Mediterranean sun’s rays shine on both sides equally. The water glitters turquoise in the bright sunshine and gently rippling waves lap on to the shore. The sheltered location in the bay is relatively free of waves. In addition, the entire beach descends shallowly into the water, so that even smaller children can safely splash around, under parental supervision, at the water's edge.
The municipality of Santa Ponsa strictly adheres to all environmental standards at Playa de Santa Ponsa. The cleanliness of the water means that the blue flag is on display for most of the year. In addition, the beach was awarded the title "Q" for high quality on the European scale. The wide beach promenade runs partly along the coast road. It is lined with cafés, restaurants and bars, which provide delicious and nutritious meals all day. A highlight in the central area is the small pine tree-lined park area. Some trees grow in the soft sand and provide a shaded canopy on sunny days.
Tourist facilities
The tourist amenities at Playa de Santa Ponsa meet all modern expectations. In the peak season from June to September, lifeguards watch over the beach. On the promenade, a first aid station will be set up to treat minor injuries and to treat minor conditions such as sunstroke, sunburn or insect bites. Fresh water showers, sanitary facilities and changing rooms are also available. From May to October you can rent out beach chairs and umbrellas. In addition to the restaurants on the promenade, other dining options at the northern and southern ends of the fine sandy beach make sure you won’t go hungry. As they are situated in an elevated position on the cliff tops, they offer a fantastic view over the bay of Cala Ponsa.
Water sports and other activities
During the summer months, Playa de Santa Ponsa offers a wide range of Mallorca Fun and Leisure. You can rent a paddleboat and sail around the bay, take a wild ride on a banana boat or rent a jet ski. Following the latest trend, paddle boards are also rented out on the beach. This water sport is starting to become the number one in Mallorca. The bathing zone in the water is marked by buoys and flags. This area is permanently monitored by lifeguards in the main season. If you want to do ‘drier’ sports, you can participate in a beach volleyball match or take a short hike to the neighbouring bay, Cala d'en Pellicer. The 20 m long sandy beach is not very busy and an oasis of peace, framed by shady pine trees.
Marina and centre of Santa Ponsa
At the southern end of the natural bay of Santa Ponsa is the Marinas in Mallorca. Here the white hulls of sailboats and motor yachts bob up and down on the water and on the quay there is a lot of activity. Just a stone's throw away is "Jungle Parc" amusement park, which enjoys great popularity especially with families with children. In the centre of Santa Ponsa there is a small cultural centre. The German pop singer, Jürgen Drews has a very popular bistro here. It is known as "King of Mallorca" and is located within walking distance from the beach. Another German Celebrities in Mallorca, Daniela Katzenberger, had a café in Santa Ponsa between 2010 and 2017 but this has now closed.
