Old monasteries in Mallorca

There is a black statue of the Virgin Mary in the chapel and every year thousands of pilgrims make a pilgrimage to the mountains to see the statue with their own eyes. About four kilometres from Petra is the Ermita de Bonany, which is worth a visit for the 8th century Madonna statue as well as its spectacular views. The mountain sides are home to three medieval monasteries - one of which: the Santuari de Sant Honorat is still inhabited by monks today. With stunning views, Ermita de Betlem monastery near Artá is located in the north east of the island. This idyllic mountain village is one of the most visited sights in Mallorca and served as a winter residence for the world-famous composer Frédéric Chopin in 1838. In the north of the island, Alcúdia in the north of Mallorca is one of the oldest towns in Mallorca.

The Romans founded a settlement on the bay here and its historic centre with several buildings from the Moorish Era is surrounded by a mighty medieval city wall. A popular attraction in the Tramuntana mountains is the small town of Sóller on the northwest coast of Mallorca, whose extraordinary architectural style is more reminiscent of Caribbean colonial buildings than the Spanish style of architecture.
