Sustainable Tourism Tax
The Sustainable Tourism Tax was introduced in the Balearic Islands on 1st July 2016. It applies to Mallorca and the neighbouring islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.
The introduction of the Sustainable Tourism Tax is due to the growing number of visitors to the Balearic Islands. The extra money raised is planned for reducing the impact of mass tourism on nature and the environment through much needed investment in nature conservation.
Amount of tax
The amount of tax depends on the type of accommodation you stay in. The highest rate is payable for 5 star Mallorcan Hotels - Mallorca holiday flair and is staggered accordingly based on the cost of your accommodation. An amount of 2 euros per person per day will be charged in many of these types of places. For overnight stays in mountain huts, guesthouses, hostels, campsites and inns, the tax is a more manageable € 0.50 per person per day. In all other places, including cruise ships, the amount is one euro. The prices are valid throughout the main season and are valid from the 1st of May to the 31st of October. In the low season from November 1st to April 30th there is a 50% discount. Children and adolescents up to the age of 16 years are generally exempt from the charges.
A special feature of the Sustainable Tourism Tax is the fact that it is collected directly from the accommodation businesses on the island. The levy will not be included in the catalogue which the tour operator shows you. However tour operators are obliged to inform the customers about the additional costs.
