Ballermann in Mallorca - the classic
No other beach is better known and more famous than the infamous party beach of Mallorca, the Balneario 6, known as Ballermann. Here, sangria used to flow in the mornings and young people, mostly from Germany, used to have one huge party. However, rules of etiquette were introduced to curb the party mood of the Balenario guests. What is the reputation of the party beach today? Does it live up to its reputation?
What is behind it?
Taken literally, balneario actually means "spa" or "health resort." Certainly, this is not what party-hungry people expect from a trip to Mallorca. Along Playa de Palma there are 15 almost identical beach bars, with the designations Balneario N° 1 to Balneario Nº 15.
The most famous of them all is, of course, "Balneario Nº 6", which became a popular meeting place for party vacationers as tourism around Palma de Mallorca and the town of S'Arenal (El Arenal) increased. Actually, the name "Ballermann" is a modification or "Einindeutschung" of the actual name Balneario N° 6.
The 15 beach bars are located along a stretch of beach of about four kilometers with a distance of about 250 - 270 meters. These serve visitors well for orientation, with the hotels near Balneario N° 4 to Balneario N° 6 being particularly sought after by party vacationers. Here the ways to the Bierkönig, to the MegaPark, to the Oberbayern and other locations are only short.
Surroundings of Balneario N° 6
Behind the beach promenade of Playa de Palma there are many hotels, restaurants, bars and discotheques, all vying for the favor of their visitors. Promotions, offers and happy hours alternate. Directly behind the Balneario N° 6 is the most famous party mile of Mallorca, namely the legendary Ham Street.
Here you can find the famous Oberbayern, the Bierkönig and the Megapark: These locations at Ballermann are known even by those who have never been to Mallorca. One could almost think that it is even a German cultural asset. Mallorca is and remains one of the most popular vacation destinations for Germans.
Rules at Ballermann
Drinking sangria from buckets, continuous music, cheap German beer: these are the characteristics for which Ballermann 6 stood for a long time. Of course, bowling clubs, soccer clubs and bachelor parties liked to spend their vacations in El Arenal. However, the behavior of many Germans increasingly became a thorn in the side of the locals.
Criticism from the locals grew louder and louder, which is why the Spanish authorities established rules of etiquette for Ballermann in May 2014. Drinking bouts as well as unbridled parties were to be completely stopped and the Platja de Palma was declared a so-called intervention zone, where fines of up to €3,000 can be imposed for violations. Nevertheless, people continue to party, even though things may not be quite as wild as they once were.
Rules of etiquette include a ban on the sale of alcohol in supermarkets between 0 - 8 a.m., a ban on excessive consumption of alcohol on the beach, and a ban on "bucket bobbing." However, people are allowed to continue partying and drinking in the bars and clubs. Therefore, the beach area is still a popular party destination today, as it has been for decades. Mallorca continues to be trendy for party people.
Extensive partying on the beach
The beach of El Arenal continues to lend itself to party vacationers. Here there are many different nightlife options that leave nothing to be desired. Countless restaurants, lounges, nightclubs and discos offer entertainment and music for tourists. During a party vacation, cocktails can be sipped right on the beach.
Parties still take place on the beach or on the boulevards. In addition, Mallorca has quite a great nightlife to offer. Not only that, but there is also culture there in abundance. For example, the capital Palma is home to the cathedral and the house of Joan Miró.
What El Arenal offers
Many of the most popular hotels for partygoers are located directly on the beach of El Arenal. This beach is about fifteen kilometers from the center of Palma, and only seven kilometers away is the airport of Palma de Mallorca.
El Arenal is not only known for its party mile, but also for the beautiful beach of the same name. Here palm trees line a wide stretch of beach. The beach itself consists of white sand and slopes slightly towards the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.
In addition, there are many providers for sailing, water skiing or surfing. Another highlight is the sports harbor of El Arenal, which makes a Majorca vacation for sports enthusiasts a unique experience.
By the way, many boat tours start here, where the coast of the island can be explored. Or you can enjoy a romantic sunset from the ship. But also on many boats themselves at night party is announced, which makes a Mallorca party vacation to the experience.
The right hotel for a party holiday
Along the Platja de Palma near Mallorca's capital are the already described 15 "balnearios". At the numbers 6 and 7 there are especially funny and varied parties. The good quality of a hotel is also important for a party trip.
There are simple hotels, middle class hotels and comfort hotels. It is possible to book hotels and flights separately. But better is a party package tour, where everything is already included.
Of course, there are also special offers, remaining places and of course last minute. So vacation with friends is fun and it can be lived out, which is not possible in everyday life.
Around El Arenal there are many possibilities to dance the night away and drink sangria. The hotels are located directly on the beach, so beach vacations can be wonderfully combined with party.
Explore Mallorca on a party vacation
A party vacation in Mallorca also offers optimal conditions to explore the other beauties of the Balearic island. So you can escape the mass tourism and discover on your own what there is to see outside the bay of El Arenal. Recommended is the medieval town of Alcúdia, located in the north.
Here you can find churches like Santa Ana and Sant Crist, the bastion Sant Ferran. You can also visit the weekly market, where Mallorcan specialties are offered. In the southwest of the island is Puerto Portals, a glamorous town that has a certain resemblance to Monte Carlo.
A highlight in the interior is the village of Valldemossa, where the composer Chopin once lived. Also worth seeing are the Coves del Drac, the Dragon Caves, a stalactite cave system located on the east coast, where the largest underground lake in Europe is located.
Of course, the Balearic island can also be explored on foot or by bike. So besides partying on the beach, you can also do something for your health. Party vacation does not have to consist only of party. Just Mallorca offers an incredible number of facets and opportunities for tourists on site.
