A Majorca vacation does not only consist of parties and the from the television sufficiently well-known area of the Ballermann, but has to offer many enchanting places and objects of interest.
Get to know Mallorca in its original form and enjoy your vacation far away from the classic tourist centers. This is by no means boring, because on the one hand the region is the perfect starting point for sports activities both inside and outside the water and on the other hand sightseeing can also be done from here without having to stay in a classic tourist stronghold.
Far away from Mallorca mass tourism
Especially if you are looking for peace and quiet and a piece of original Mallorca in your vacation, a stay in the picturesque town of Portocolom in the east of the ballear island is ideal. The small fishing village is home to the largest natural harbor in Mallorca and is in large parts not yet overrun by classic tourism.
According to the stories, even the famous navigator Christopher Columbus was born here, but this fact could not be proven so far. Portocolom has many contemplative corners to explore.
For example, the old town, which is located directly at the harbor, invites you to take a leisurely stroll and then stop at a cozy café or one of the traditional Mallorcan restaurants.
The tourist life takes place largely in the south of the town, where also the small sandy beach Cala Marçal is located. With a view of the rocky coast and turquoise green sea, the stressful everyday life is completely forgotten here at the latest and you feel you have arrived in paradise.
A quiet beach holiday
If vacation means beach and sea for you, there are enough possibilities to pursue this passion in the immediate surroundings of Portocolom. For example, the beach S'Arenal is located directly opposite the village center and offers a beautiful and at the same time protected location and a magnificent view of the Portocolom harbor.
In addition, you can relax here with a cool drink in the beach bar. Away from the beach, it is also worth taking a closer look at the Portocolom lighthouse.
Portocolom harbour in focus
Portocolom harbour is home to impressive sailing yachts as well as still smaller fishing boats, which give the place its very own charm. If you want to go on a trip yourself, you can get permission to rent a sports boat or sailboat with the appropriate knowledge.
For this purpose, there are several providers at the port of Portocolom, so that no wishes remain unfulfilled. Those who prefer to drift on vacation or do not have deeper knowledge of sailing or boating, simply make a guided boat trip.
A boat trip in Mallorca is always a special experience. Perhaps you are also attracted to the sea creatures and try your luck on a dolphin tour to experience one of the lively comrades in the wild.
If you want to get to know the underwater world directly, a boat trip with the Glass Bottom Boat is a good choice, where you have a direct view into the sea in the lower area. The catamarans offer plenty of comfort and there is no lack of catering facilities.
The trip is along the coast, stopping at several coastal resorts. It is therefore also possible to use the boats as a water cab and thus visit the towns in the area.
From Portocolom, a visit to the traditional fishing village of Cala Figuera is particularly recommended. The romantic alleys and the picturesque bay are perfect motifs for your vacation photos. As a water lover, you can also stay on the boat and use one of the stops for a swim in the turquoise green sea.
Vacation in Portocolom - excursion destinations in the surrounding area
Due to its location, Portocolom is a wonderful starting point for excursions to the south of Mallorca. So you should not miss a visit to Felantix, Santanyi or Manacor, if you like shopping and looking for a nice souvenir for the most beautiful time of the year.
In Felantix there are also numerous archaeological sites that make a visit worthwhile. The beginnings of the city date back to Roman times. Near Felantix is the Puig Sant Salvador, the highest mountain in the vicinity, which offers a fantastic view over the surrounding area all the way to Portocolom.
Furthermore, you should consider a side trip to the Parc Natural Mondrago between Portocolom and Santanyi. There you will get a fantastic impression of the local flora and fauna. Thus, you can choose to walk or bike through the most diverse natural landscapes.
The desire to do something in your free time
If you prefer to do sports during your vacation, in addition to the classic water sports, which include snorkeling and diving, there are also numerous running, hiking and biking trails to discover this picturesque spot on your own and find your own favorite spot. In addition, the town of Felantix has the Vall d'Or golf resort, on some of whose greens you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Mediterranean Sea.
For a day trip, a trip to the dragon caves near Porto Cristo is highly recommended. A special highlight is the classical concert on the world's largest underground lake, the sounds of which echo off the cave walls. After the concert, you can either leave the caves via the paths or cross the lake in one of the boats provided.
Not far away is also the town of Manacor, which has gained fame even beyond the city limits, especially for its pearl craft. The factory can be visited and the skills of the workers can be admired with your own eyes.
Not far from the city on the MA-4015 road in the direction of Cales de Mallorca is the "S'Hospitalet Vell", a prehistoric village where you can get a glimpse of life in pre-Christian times. If you are interested in history, it is also worth visiting the "Museo de Manacor" with relics from different eras.
If you long for the hustle and bustle of a big city in between, the capital of the island Palma can be reached by rental car in about an hour. Here you can go on an extensive shopping spree or stop in one of the numerous bars and restaurants.
You should not miss a visit to the impressive cathedral of St. Mary, built in Gothic style. It is located directly on the sea and is one of the largest sacred buildings in Spain.
Peaceful Mallorca in Portocolom
As you can see, a Majorca vacation has much more to offer than partying and a pure beach vacation - even if such a vacation is more than tempting when looking at the beautiful sandy beaches with their crystal clear turquoise water.
The Balearic Island also has some cultural gems up its sleeve and is also the place to be for sports enthusiasts.
